The City of Madison Street Department is responsible for maintaining and improving the community’s transportation network so residents, businesses, and visitors can travel safely and efficiently throughout the city. From day-to-day maintenance to long-term infrastructure planning, the department plays a vital role in keeping Madison’s streets, sidewalks, and public rights-of-way in good repair.

Core Functions & Responsibilities

Street Maintenance & Repair

  • Patching potholes, repairing pavement surfaces, and performing routine street upkeep.
  • Overseeing crack sealing, chip sealing, and other preservation methods to extend pavement life.
  • Maintaining gravel streets and alleys, including grading and surface stabilization.


Snow & Ice Control

  • Plowing, sanding, and salting streets during winter weather events.
  • Keeping emergency routes clear to ensure access for police, fire, EMS, and school transportation.
  • Monitoring weather conditions and responding promptly to winter hazards.

 

Street Construction & Capital Projects

  • Assisting with or overseeing street reconstruction, resurfacing projects, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Coordinating with contractors, engineers, and utility providers during major construction projects.
  • Installing or maintaining culverts, stormwater structures, and drainage features tied to street systems.


Traffic Control & Signage

  • Installing and maintaining traffic control devices, including stop signs, speed limits, and warning signs.
  • Ensuring signage meets state and federal standards for visibility and safety.
  • Repairing or replacing signs damaged by weather, accidents, or normal wear.

 

Right-of-Way Management

  • Maintaining public rights-of-way, including vegetation control, tree trimming, and removal of obstructions.
  • Repairing or replacing curbs, gutters, and sidewalk segments when needed.
  • Supporting utility companies and contractors working within the right-of-way.


Street Sweeping & Cleanliness

  • Sweeping streets to improve safety, reduce debris, and protect stormwater systems.
  • Removing storm debris, fallen branches, or hazards from public roadways.


Equipment & Facilities Maintenance

  • Performing routine maintenance and repairs on city trucks, equipment, and tools.
  • Ensuring vehicles and machinery are ready for year-round operations, especially during winter months.
