Nebraska is the only state in the nation served with electricity totally from public power.
The City of Madison’s electricity is supplied by the Nebraska Public Power District under a wholesale power purchase agreement, in addition to the Western Area Power Association (WAPA). In addition, the city owns its own generation plant that is used during maintenance periods and emergencies.
In 2024, the City of Madison partnered with Bluestem Energy Solutions to construct a solar power generation facility. Madison was selected to receive a Powering Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) program award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which helped kick-start the project. The USDA is providing Bluestem with a loan that is 40% forgiven. The solar farm generates up to 2 MW of clean, renewable energy.
